What Can Be Achieved with Rhinoplasty (Nose Aesthetics)?
-
A nose size in harmony with the face is achieved. Just as a small nose does not suit a wide face, a large nose does not look harmonious on a small face.
-
The width of the nasal bone can be narrowed, and the size and position of the nostrils can be changed.
-
The hump in the nasal bone and in the cartilage structure is corrected and a smooth nasal profile can be achieved.
-
A nasal tip that is wide, drooping, collapsed or hooked can be corrected.
-
Wide and large nostrils can be reduced and narrowed.
-
Nasal asymmetry can be corrected
If you desire a more symmetrical nose, keep in mind that everyone's face is asymmetrical to some degree. Although the aim is to achieve a balanced facial appearance and to create the correct proportions, the results may not be completely symmetrical.
Can Breathing Disorder and Deviated Septum Be Corrected During Aesthetic Nose Surgery?
The blocked airway can be opened during aesthetic nose surgery. Before the operation, a detailed and careful evaluation is carried out in order to identify the structures that block the airway. In most cases, "Computed Tomography" is used to identify the defective areas inside the nose. A deviated septum, which is one of the most common causes of breathing disorder, can be corrected during aesthetic nose surgery.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Rhinoplasty (Nose Aesthetics)?
Rhinoplasty is a highly personalised procedure. You should have rhinoplasty for yourself, you should not fulfil someone else's wishes and you should not try to resemble the appearance of anyone you consider ideal.
If your facial development is complete (if you are over 17 years of age), if you are physically healthy (if you do not have an additional illness), if you do not smoke or will not smoke in the period before and after the operation, and if you have a positive outlook and realistic goals for improving your appearance;
Then you are a good candidate for rhinoplasty.
What Should I Share with My Plastic Surgeon at the Rhinoplasty (Nose Aesthetics) Consultation?
What you should share with the doctor you visit for a rhinoplasty consultation:
-
What are your wishes, both in terms of appearance and breathing?
-
Do your general health condition, any drug allergies and any diagnosed illnesses affect rhinoplasty surgery?
-
Do the medicines, vitamins and herbal supplements you use, alcohol, tobacco and any other addictive substances affect your surgery?
-
Do the operations you have had previously (if any) cause a problem?
-
He or she will evaluate your general health condition and your pre-existing illnesses or risk factors.
-
He or she will review the alternative options that can be used to reshape your nose (fillers, thread suspension methods, etc.).
-
Your face will be examined and analysed, and measurements will be taken if necessary
-
Photographs will be taken
-
He or she will explain the stages you will go through during the rhinoplasty operation and what you need to do afterwards
-
He or she will explain the results of rhinoplasty and what any risks or possible complications are.
During the consultation, your aesthetic surgeon will evaluate the following conditions;
It is very important to understand all aspects of your rhinoplasty procedure. It is perfectly natural to feel stressed before the operation and to worry about your appearance afterwards. Do not hesitate to discuss these feelings with your plastic surgeon.
When you come for a rhinoplasty consultation, it is important to share all the questions and concerns on your mind with your plastic surgeon. I have prepared a list of the matters you can generally consult your plastic surgeon about, in order to help you. You can find it below.
What Questions Should I Ask My Plastic Surgeon About Rhinoplasty (Nose Aesthetics)?
Use this checklist as a guide at your rhinoplasty consultation:
-
Were you specifically trained in the field of aesthetic surgery?
-
How many years of plastic surgery training did you receive?
-
Can this procedure be performed at every health centre? For example, can it be done at the practice? If it cannot be performed there, in which hospitals can it be performed?
-
Am I a good candidate for this procedure?
-
What is the best result you expect for me? What kind of changes will there be in my nose and my face?
-
Where and with which type of anaesthesia will you perform my surgery?
-
Which surgical technique do you recommend for me?
-
How long is the recovery period? What kind of help will I need during recovery?
-
What are the risks and complications associated with rhinoplasty?
-
How are complications handled and how are they corrected?
-
What are my options if I am not satisfied with the cosmetic results of my nose surgery?
-
Do you have before and after photographs I can look at for this procedure? What results are reasonable for me?
What Are the Preparations Before Rhinoplasty (Nose Aesthetics)?
When preparing for rhinoplasty surgery;
-
Laboratory tests will be carried out for the anaesthesia
-
If you have medicines that you use daily or routinely, these will be adjusted before the anaesthesia
-
You will be asked not to smoke from 1 week before the operation until 1 week after the operation
-
You will be asked to avoid using aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements, as they can increase bleeding.
-
Since you will be discharged on the same day or 1 day after the operation, make sure that there is someone to accompany you during this period.
What Are the Steps of Rhinoplasty (Nose Aesthetics) Surgery?
Rhinoplasty surgery includes the following steps:
Step 1 – Anaesthesia
Medications are administered for your comfort during the surgical procedure. Intravenous sedation or general anaesthesia is administered. Your doctor will recommend the best choice for you.
Step 2 – Incision
Rhinoplasty can be performed with the closed technique or the open technique. In the closed technique the incisions are made only inside the nose, while in the open technique it is performed with an incision at the base of the nose (between the tip of the nose and the lips). Thanks to these incisions, the skin covering the nasal bones and cartilage is gently lifted and the nose is reshaped
Step 3 – Correction of the Deviated Septum
If the septum is deviated, it can be corrected and the septal protrusions inside the nose can be reduced in order to improve breathing.
Step 4 – Reshaping the Nasal Structure
An aesthetic appearance is achieved by reducing the bone or cartilage structures in the parts of the nose that are large. In most nose operations, cartilage tissue is needed during reshaping. These cartilage needs are met with the cartilage removed from the reduced cartilage structures or from the structure in the middle of the nose called the septum. Rarely, the cartilage need is met from the ear cartilage or from the rib cartilage.
Step 5 – Closing the Incisions
After the cartilage and bone structure in the nose have been brought into the desired shape, the nasal skin and tissue are laid back over the bone and cartilage and the incisions are closed. If the nostrils are large, the nostrils can be reduced by making new incisions where the nasal wings meet the lip.
Step 6 – the Final Appearance
Silicone splints may be placed inside the nose. If changes have been made to the bone structure, a nasal cast is applied.
What Awaits Me During the Recovery Period After Rhinoplasty (Nose Aesthetics)?
If silicone splints have been placed inside the nose during the recovery period, the splints are removed within 2-3 days. Thanks to these splints, which allow you to breathe through your nose, patients experience a more comfortable postoperative period. Compared with gauze packing, removal is much easier and takes less time.
If a nasal cast has been applied to the patient, this cast is removed within 5 to 7 days. After the cast is removed, taping is applied to the nose. This taping may be repeated twice at 3-day intervals. Rarely, the cast needs to be removed and a new cast applied. The stitches at the tip of the nose are removed on the 5th day after the operation.
While most of the swelling subsides within a few weeks, it may take longer than 6 months for your new nasal structure to settle completely. During this period you may notice gradual changes in the appearance of your nose.
For the postoperative period, your plastic surgeon will explain to you how to take care of yourself regarding the following matters;
-
How you will care for the surgical area?
-
Which medicines you will use orally or on the skin and mucous membranes, and how often, in order to aid healing and reduce the risk of infection?
-
Special recommendations required for your new nose and your general health; the amount of rest you need, the way you lie in bed, how often you apply ice, etc.
-
What the effects of the sun on the surgical site are? What the methods of sun protection will be?
-
When you will come to your plastic surgeon for a check-up?
What Are the Risks of Rhinoplasty (Nose Aesthetics)?
The decision to undergo an aesthetic surgery operation is extremely personal. While some people with a similar nose decide to have the shape of their nose changed, others never consider aesthetic rhinoplasty. You must decide whether the result to be achieved with rhinoplasty will meet your wishes and whether the risks and potential complications of rhinoplasty are acceptable for you.
Your plastic surgeon will explain the risks associated with the operation in detail. You will be asked to sign consent forms to make sure that you fully understand the procedure, the risks and the possible complications.
Although the complication rates of rhinoplasty surgery are low, the risks can be listed as follows;
-
Risks related to anaesthesia
-
Infection
-
Wound healing problems
-
Change in skin sensation. It is mostly felt as numbness. It is usually temporary.
-
The breathing problems you felt before the operation not resolving completely
-
Discolouration of the skin
-
The possibility of revision surgery
These risks and others will be fully discussed prior to your consent. It is important that you discuss all your questions directly with your plastic surgeon.
What Results Should I Expect After Rhinoplasty (Nose Aesthetics)?
The results of aesthetic nose surgery are long-lasting. While most of the swelling subsides within the first few weeks, it may take 6 months and sometimes longer for the shape of your nose to settle. During this period you may notice gradual changes in the appearance of your nose that turn into a more permanent result.
What Is the Cost of Rhinoplasty (Nose Aesthetics)?
Every surgeon has a fee that they set for the rhinoplasty they will perform. This fee varies depending on the surgeon's own experience, the geographical location of their practice and the hospital where the operation will take place.
Rhinoplasty (Nose Aesthetics) and Health Insurance
When rhinoplasty is performed to improve breathing function, the most common reason is a blocked airway. Surgical interventions performed only to open a blocked airway are covered by health insurance. However, health insurance does not pay for aesthetic rhinoplasty.
